Resveratrol

Why it's Dermoi

Resveratrol is an extremely powerful active ingredient that has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits.

Resveratrol itself possesses antioxidant properties and therefore protects cellular lipids, proteins, and DNA from environmental damage. In addition, Resveratrol also up-regulates the gene expression and activity of other anti-inflammatory and antioxidants that are naturally found in the body. These are Superoxide Dismutase, Catalase, and Glutathione.

Because of this, Resveratrol provides high-strength protection to the skin tissue and prevents inflammation and premature photoaging.

Description

Resveratrol has been a topic of interest in scientific research for years. It is an extremely powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory active ingredient that has the ability to modify gene expression. Resveratrol is commonly found in grapes and is present as the leading antioxidant in red wines. It can also be found in coloured berries and the peanut plant.

Antioxidants have the ability to protect the skin from damage, inflammation, and premature aging from environmental elements. This is because the environment contains highly reactive molecules called free radicals. Free radicals can react with the lipids, proteins, and DNA of human cells causing damage. This damage causes inflammation, and overtime, contributes to premature aging in the body and the skin. Antioxidants react with free radical molecules and protect cells.

Resveratrol has its own antioxidant capability but is also known to boost the intracellular gene expression and activity of natural antioxidants in the body. Resveratrol up-regulates Glutathione, Superoxide Dismutase, and Catalase. Resveratrol also supports the function of cellular structures called Mitochondria that are responsible for energy production.

When incorporated into nutraceutical skin supplements, Resveratrol has good bioavailability and is quickly absorbed after absorption (approximately 30 minutes), however only a small amount will reach the skin tissue as it is rapidly metabolised. Resveratrol is best incorporated into topical skincare regimes for anti-aging effects. As Resveratrol is an unstable molecule, sophisticated skincare formulations are needed to preserve its potency.
