Rosacea is a common skin problem, with symptoms including skin redness, visible blood vessels and pimples. It's a highly sensitive condition but so many people are making their flare-ups worse! In this blog, find out what you should be avoiding if you have rosacea-prone skin, as well as the best products and treatments to soothe affected areas.

What Is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition categorised by facial redness, pimples, broken visible blood vessels, and in extreme cases a misshapen nose.

The condition is most common on facial skin and around the eyes, but it can also affect other areas. It's also more common in women and people with lighter skin tones. However, symptoms can be much more severe in men.

The symptoms and appearance can be similar to adult acne, however the causes are not the same.

What Are the Symptoms of Rosacea?

Long term redness

Redness in the face that won’t go away is the most common sign of rosacea.

Flushed or blushed skin

This occurs regularly and is common on the nose, cheeks, chin, forehead and neck.

Pimples, papules and pustules

Similar to those found in acne, pimples, papules and pustules are common. These usually come in the form of hard red lumps or softer puss filled bumps on the skin’s surface.

Visible blood vessels

Enlarged blood vessels appear under the skin, particularly on the cheek area. They often appear as web-like structures beneath the skin’s surface. This symptom is most common in women.

Eye irritation

The condition also affects the eyes and eyelids. Symptoms are characterised by burning, redness, inflamed eyelids, and the feeling that there is something in your eye.

Thickened skin

This mainly happens on the nose and appears after years of the condition. This symptom can lead to a permanent misshapen nose.

Burning sensation

Sufferers may experience a burning sensation when using skincare products due to highly sensitive skin. Even water can irritate affected areas.

Natural Triggers for Rosacea

While we don’t know for sure what causes rosacea, we do know what can trigger flare ups. Try to limit your exposure to the following to avoid making your symptoms worse:

  • Sunlight/UV radiation
  • Alcohol
  • Eating spicy food
  • Cheese
  • Caffeine
  • Hot drinks
  • Aerobic exercise
  • stress
  • Overheating

Your Skincare Routine May Be Making Your Rosacea Worse

People suffering with rosacea have highly sensitive skin and your skin care products may be making it worse. Harsh cleansers and facial washes should be avoided at all costs, as well as astringents.

The cleansers we recommend for rosacea prone skin are Indeed Lab’s Watermelon Melting Balm, or the Osmosis Lift Away Cleansing Balm.

Harsh exfoliants or any products with high levels of acid or potential irritants are also likely to make your rosacea flare worse.

A good moisturiser is also a vital part of rosacea skincare. Moisturisers create a barrier that blocks irritants and soothes symptoms. However, moisturisers need to be selected carefully.

The fewer the ingredients, the better.

We recommend the PCA Skin Collagen Hydrator and the Osmosis Enrich Restorative Face and Neck Cream.

Dermoi Recommended Rosacea Products

While rosacea cannot be cured, symptoms can be controlled. If left untreated, the condition can slowly get worse overtime which can result in long term skin damage. Here are the Dermoi recommended Rosacea skincare products:

Osmosis Skin Clarifier

Rosacea has been linked with poor gut health. This 10-day blemish cleanse clarifies your skin from the inside out.

Osmosis Skin Clarifier gently cleanses the digestive tract of mucus build-up which is a common cause of many rosacea symptoms, including redness and pimples.

It detoxes mucus throughout the entire body to improve skin clarity and bring back radiance.

Codex Antu Brightening Serum

The Codex Antu Brightening Serum is ideal for targetting dull skin. This Brightening Serum hydrates, plumps, and reverses visible the signs of inflammation and aging.

As well as this, it naturally brightens and evens out skin tone so is the perfect rosacea treatment.

Osmosis Rescue Epidermal Repair Serum

This multitasking serum effectively treats blemishes, calms redness, effectively aids in fading scars, improves skin tone and softens the complexion.

It can be used as a face serum or a spot treatment.

Treatments You Need to Avoid

While skincare treatments may be great for your friend’s skin, treatments have the potential to make rosacea-prone skin so much worse.

Most facial treatments, like deep chemical peels, cause further irritation and inflammation which is a no-go for rosacea sufferers.

Microdermabrasion, deep chemicals peels and dermaplaning should all be avoided. These all work by resurfacing the top layer of the skin which causes irritation and will undoubtedly flare up rosacea.

Treatments should aim to repair inflammatory damage not make it worse, which is where Dermoi comes in.
