Don't ignore the pH of your skin! (and ditch those make-up wipes)

You may think that your make-up wipes are cleansing your face of all the toxins and impurities from the day – the reality is that they are likely to be doing more harm than good. They only remove a small percentage of all the dirt that ends up in your pores and on the surface of your skin and don’t clean all the make-up from your face. You may think – they’re not removing everything, but surely, they aren’t doing any harm?

Wrong. Most of the time, all they’re doing is smearing dead skin cells, make-up and other impurities across your face and clogging up your pores, causing blemishes and blackheads. As well as this, most make up wipes are disrupting the pH of your skin. Having a balanced pH is needed in order to balance and maintain our skin’s natural immunities. Our skin should sit at around a pH of 5.5 to fight off toxins, meaning our skin is slightly acidic. pH levels can be affected by the products we use, UV light and other environmental factors such as pollution.

There are enzymes in our skin that contribute to the breakdown of collagen (a protein that keeps skin firm and strong); these enzymes are activated by an alkaline pH. Therefore, if you’re using a product with a pH of higher than 7 (which many drugstore skincare and cleansing wipes do), it could be dehydrating your skin with every use as well as causing premature aging. You need to consider the ingredients in the products that you’re using on your face – if they’re dehydrating your skin, they’re most likely not good enough. A high pH can cause skin conditions to flare up (eg. Eczema or acne), as well as signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles.

When it comes to removing make up, use a good quality cleanser with a suitable pH (such as iS Clinical’s Cleansing Complex (pH 5.6) or Osmosis’ Deep Clean (pH 6)), and make sure you do a double cleanse to flush your pores of impurities. It is also great to use a cleanser with exfoliating properties, such as iS Clinical’s Warming Honey Cleanser, as it will clean deep down in your pores.
