What Is the Menopause?

Menopause is diagnosed after 12 months without menstruation. It occurs naturally with age as a result of ovarian function coming to a permanent end. Furthermore, the menopause usually occurs around the age of 50, with 51 being the average age that people experience the change.

It causes a range of additional psychological and physiological changes, including hot flushes, low mood, and difficulty sleeping. Most symptoms begin before the final menstruation¹ and usually last around 4 years from your last period.²,³

Menopausal Skin: The Effects of Menopause on Skin

A decline in oestrogen levels causes adverse side effects in the skin.

“Oestrogen promotes water retention and plumpness in the skin, when oestrogen drops, you lose some of the molecules that help keep the skin moisturised.”
– Dermatologist Kiyanna Williams

Collagen is vital for preserving healthy, plump skin. What’s more, oestrogen is needed to produce collagen, so when levels drop so does collagen production. Resultantly, the skin looses plumpness and will begin to sag at a more rapid rate.

30% of skin collagen is lost in the first 5 years after menopause – this is the fastest acceleration of skin aging! This is why menopause skincare is so important.

Menopause skin itching is another common complaint. Itching skin from menopause comes as a result of a loss of water retention. Therefore, using a high quality moisturiser, such as the PCA Skin Collagen Hydrator or Emepelle Night Cream, is essential.

Dark spots on menopausal skin are common too. However, these are a little harder to treat and generally require having a series of facial treatments. We recommend the PCA Perfecting Peel as this facial contains mandolin acid 20% which acts directly on melanocytes. A melanocyte is the technical term for the dark spots that appear. The additional exfoliation combined with the treatment’s retinoid booster make this the perfect treatment for menopausal skin.

Post-menopause acne breakouts are sadly also common. Again the PCA Perfecting Peel or the Osmosis Acne Healing Treatment are perfect for treating this.

When Should I Start Using Emepelle Night Cream?

The ideal time to start using Emepelle Night Cream is the minute you start to notice menopausal symptoms, such as hot flushes and night sweats.

Both the Emepelle Serum and Night Cream are also suitable for pre-menopause skin. This period is known as the perimenopause and this is when oestrogen levels start to decline.

Emepelle Serum and Emepelle Night Cream ingredients include antioxidants, hyaluronic acid, retinol and more in order to provide all the ingredients needed to combat menopausal skin aging.

Both products also work on post menopause skin as even post menopause oestrogen receptors can still be activated and stimulated.

How Should I Use Emepelle Night Cream?

To gain the full benefits of the MEP Technology, Emepelle recommend adding both the Emepelle Serum and Emepelle Night Cream to your daily skincare routine.

The serum should be applied in the morning, while the Night Cream is best suited for evening application.

Skin affected by menopause may be more fragile and sensitive and thus more susceptible to irritation. As a result of this, it is best to ease into using the cream, rather than heading straight into daily use.

Firstly, begin by using Emepelle Night Cream just 3 times a week for the first 2 weeks. Increase to 4 times a week in week 3, before moving on to application 5 times a week in week 5.

In summary, it’s never been easier to get younger looking skin, even in the face of the menopause. Emepelle is a groundbreaking brand changing the lives of women across the world.
